Anti- inflammatory medicines are the first choice of people who have been suffering from pain or swelling on account of arthritis or any other injuries. The anti-inflammatory medicine which is most commonly prescribed in such ailments is Ibuprofen. This medicine is non-steroidal in nature and it has the ability to reduce the inflammation, making it effective for treatment of pain. Ibuprofen lessens the quantity of those hormones which are responsible for pain and inflammation in the human body. It has become so indispensable for the people and the physicians that it has even been mentioned as a core medicine in the WHO’s “Essential Drugs List”.
Even though it is a very important medicine, side effects of Ibuprofen can’t be overlooked. The digestive system of our body is the first victim of the prolonged use of this medication. People often complain of heartburn, nausea, indigestion and sometimes cramps or instances of gas after consuming Ibuprofen. In few cases, there may be instances of constipation or diarrhea as well. There are chances of internal bleeding and ulcer if the symptoms persist. As compared to the youngsters, elderly people are more prone to the negative effects of the medication. a person having mild gastrointestinal problem will be eased off his problem if he takes food with a dose of Ibuprofen. If food is taken with Ibuprofen, the stomach wall will be protected but the lining of the wall will be torn down by its persistent use.
Some of the more common side effects of Ibuprofen are nervousness, itching, headaches or ringing in the ears. Its use may also lead to water retention and loss of appetite, many a times. There are also instances when a person gets consumed after consuming Ibuprofen. The less common side effects include insomnia, sores in the mouth or depression. A small number of people also complained about meningitis, anemia, and hair loss or heart palpitations.
There are many harmful effects related to its persistent use. There may be cardiovascular problems or severe effects on the liver and the kidney. A person, who is allergic to its use, is strictly advised to avoid its use as it may cause allergic reactions in the person. There may be rashes or fever, or even a sudden drop in the blood pressure. Women who are pregnant are advised not to take this medication especially during the last three months of the pregnancy. If a mother is still breast-feeding her child, she should consult her doctor before taking the medication. Ibuprofen is a big NO for the children who are allergic to its use and it is strictly prohibited in case of children suffering from asthma, angioedema, liver or kidney disease, chicken pox, blood clot disorder or aspirin allergy.
